KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI ended lower on Tuesday as cautious sentiment weighed on buying patterns ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting.

At 5pm, the 30-stock index was down 5.53 points, or 0.38% to 1,463.69 after moving between 1,466.49 and 1,459.12 throughout the day.

Winners and losers were closely balanced, with 390 gainers against 409 losers and 410 that were flat. About 2.41 billion shares, valued at RM1.89bil, changed hands.

In today’s session, 20 of the 30 KLCI-component stocks closed down, while seven closed higher.

Nestle shed 40 sen to RM134.10, PETRONAS Gas lost 36 sen to RM16.64, PETRONAS Dagangan eased 30 sen to RM22.50 and Batu Kawan declined 20 sen to RM22.80.

Among the gainers, Dutch Lady rose 40 sen to RM33, KESM added 40 sen to RM7.10, Malaysian Pacific Industries gained 26 sen to RM30.50 and Heineken advanced 22 sen to RM22.72.

UMediC, which made its debut on the ACE Market today, closed 12 sen, or 37.5% higher at 44 sen with 123.48 million shares traded.

Meanwhile, the ringgit was quoted at 4.4565, down 0.09% against the US dollar.

US West Texas Intermediate crude rose US$2.06 to US$98.76 a barrel and Brent added US$2.05 to US$107.20 per barrel.

Elsewhere in the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.16%, South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.39%, China’s Shanghai Composite index was up 0.83% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed up 1.67%.
